10 Days—Maasai Mara To Loita Hills Wilderness Camping Safari - NORTHWEST ADVENTURE SAFARIS

10 days—Maasai Mara to Loita Hills wilderness Camping Safari

10 Days

The Maasai Mara is considered Kenya’s best wildlife sanctuary, where plains animals can still be seen which in turn support a large population of predators. The 500-mile yearly migration of one and a quarter million wildebeest with the dramatic river crossings is one of the wonders of the world and a UNESCO world heritage site. Our wilderness safari will have you walking and camping in the wild in the Nguruman Forest and Loita Hills east of the Maasai Mara.

  • Walking safari—with armed guard
  • Cultural visits—orphanages, markets, schools
  • Bushman | tribal visits

You will be picked from the airport and driven to your hotel. If you arrived on an early flight, we will get you lunch and do some site seeing in Nairobi. We may visit the Nairobi National Museum, which is always a good introduction to the country. Later you can have dinner in one of Nairobi's numerous restaurant.

The Heron Portico

Masai Mara

Check out after breakfast and depart for the Mara. Stopover and Lunch in Narok town. Approximately 6 hours travel time. Our camp will be set up in a secluded wooded area along the banks of the Mara River in the northern part of the reserve. Our Staff will have already set up camp by the time we arrive. There will be an evening game drive depending on the time we get to camp.

Masai Mara

Morning and evening game drives. Elephants and Maasai giraffe are common. If you’re lucky you might see a leopard or black rhino. The Mara has Kenya’s largest population of lions with prides numbering over 20 individuals. The open country is also ideal for cheetahs, hyenas, hunting dogs and jackals.

Masai Mara

Leave camp after an early breakfast for a long game drive to the southern end of the park. We will end up at one of the game lodges, Tayari luxury tented camp near Sekenani gate where we will spend the night. Here we get to freshen up and briefed on the trip to Loita hills.

Tayari Tented camp

A drive to the southern tip of the Loita Hills just outside Olrote Market. Here we will be only 6Km from the border with Tanzania, deep in Maasai country. A visit to a Maasai homestead depending on arrival time. Here we will also Prep for the hike in Loita hills.

 Wilderness camping

We break camp early and set off on our first day of hiking. This is a donkey supported expedition, the donkey being the traditional means of transporting goods among the Maasai. The bulk of our camping equipment will be carried by donkeys. You will only be required to carry a day pack. The first day will take us through Maasai villages to the edge of the forest where we will have our first camp.

 Wilderness camping

Our hike will take us north and deeper into the rolling, wooded hills of the Loita Naimina forest or the forest of the lost child as it is known in the local folklore. This is an area of religious significance for the Maasai. As we get to the top of the hills we will have a spectacular view of the Great Rift Valley and Lake Magadi in the distance.

Wilderness camping

We turn west and head towards the little market of Entasekera on the western edge of the forest. We will camp at the foot of the beautiful Emburumbutia hills. During this stretch we might get a chance to visit a Masai village and get to interact and see their way of life.

Day 09 :
Entasekera

Our hike ends at the small market town of Entasekera. We will link up with our support vehicle and camp in a small wooded area just outside town. This will be the last day and here we get to say our good bye to the Maasai guides. This night will be spent at camp.

Drive to Nairobi with a lunch stop in Narok town. Drop off at the airport and departure.
